Overview

This module introduces the core principles of data science and statistical analysis for business decision-making. It integrates descriptive analytics, probability modelling, and statistical inference to help students extract insight and value from data in business contexts such as marketing, finance, management, and economics.

Students develop practical skills in exploring and visualising data, understanding data-generating processes, applying probability models, and using sampling theory to make evidence-based inferences about populations.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be over 21 years.  A Level 7 qualification or equivalent is required.

What you will Learn

On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Analyse and visualise business data using appropriate numerical and graphical techniques to describe distributions, variability, and patterns, implementing these methods with statistical software.
  • Apply foundational probability concepts and distributions (discrete and continuous) to model uncertainty and support decision-making in business contexts.
  • Evaluate data collection and sampling methods, identifying bias, variability, and the implications of sampling design for the reliability of statistical conclusions.
  • Use sampling distributions, standard errors, and the Central Limit Theorem to justify and carry out statistical inference for population means and proportions.
  • Conduct and communicate an end-to-end business data analysis, including constructing and interpreting confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, checking assumptions, interpreting software output, and presenting findings in a clear statistical report for decision-making.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at undergraduate level 8.
