Dr Kate Quinn met staff of the International Office at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso during a recent visit to Chile in October 2024. Spanish and Latin American studies at University of Galway has a long-standing exchange with the PUCV, and staff were delighted to host Professor Orlando de la Vega, Head of the PUCV International Office when he visited Galway earlier this year.

Dr Kate Quinn and Monika Jurkiewicz (NUI Travelling Studentship doctoral candidate) participated in the 5th International Festival Santiago Negro in Santiago de Chile in September 2024. Dr Quinn presented on the work of contemporary Chilean women crime writers, while Monika Jurkiewicz presented on the work of Argentine crime writer Claudia Piñeiro.

Spanish at the School of LLC and ELE Eirínn (Association for Spanish University Teachers in Ireland) will be hosting a talk by Dr Alberto Bruzos Moro (Director of Spanish at Princeton University) on Artificial Intelligence, language mercantilization and precarity in foreign language teaching & learning. He has published on linguistic relativism, semantic motivation, the pragmatics of irony, the commercialization and institutionalization of language education, language policy and the use of service learning and the linguistic landscape in L2 teaching. Argentine Ambassador Ana Laura Cachaza, Minister Nicolás Vidal and Consul Juan Andrés Taccetti are pictured here with students and staff of the Spanish Discipline in the Hardiman Building after their screening of the legendary Argentine film Camila (1984) by María Luisa Bemberg last Thursday in the BOI Theatre. The story has an interesting connection to Ireland with Camila O´Gorman being of Irish descent, a 19th-century Argentine socialite. It was a very enjoyable and successful event! Prof Patrick Crowley, Head of School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures welcomed the Argentine Embassy and addressed the audience before the screening of the film. There will be a special screening of the Argentine film Camila (1984) by María Luisa Bemberg next Thursday 3rd October at 13:30 in the Bank of Ireland Theatre in the O’Donoghue Center (with English subtitles). The Argentine Ambassador will be there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film’s release. The film has a really interesting connection to Ireland, Camila O'Gorman. There will also be a wine reception after the film (wine, soft drinks and “alfajores” – sweet food from Argentina) at 16:00 in the Hardiman Building, room G010.

Dr. Kate Quinn and postgraduate researcher Monika Jurkiewicz of the Spanish Discipline addressed the denunciation of machism in the gender black and feminist issues in "The Time of Flies", the novel by Claudia Piñeiro on Sunday the 29th at 4:30 p.m. Kate and Monika are taking part in this year's Literature festival Córdoba Mata in Valle de Calamuchita in Córdoba, Argentina. Dr Rachel Robinson, Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Galway and Prof. Dr. Jenny Haase (Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg) organized last week a three-day symposium entitled “Poetic Matter: Poetry, Materialities and the Environment in Contemporary Hispanic Literatures” at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale), Germany. Participants from Germany, Ireland, Belgium, the UK, Chile and Argentina explored connections between and ontologies of language and environment as material in 20th- and 21st-century Spanish and Latin American poetry. The symposium included a provocative poetry reading by participants in Halle’s Literaturhaus and an exclusive visit to Halle’s Moritzburg Museum’s archive of the works of Chilean visual poet Guillermo Deisler, who lived in exile in Halle as a result of Pinochet’s military dictatorship. The conference was graciously funded by the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation, the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg and the University of Galway’s School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

The International Conference in Children’s Literature and Translation Studies (CLTS) took place from the 22nd - 23rd of August 2024 in Stockholm under the theme: New Voices in Children’s Literature in Translation: Culture, Power and Transnational Approaches Dr. Pilar Alderete Diez of the Spanish Discipline at the University of Galway is part of the Organizing and Scientific Committee of CLTS. Dr. Diez will be representing the University of Galway in August 2024. Organizing team and director of the Institute of Interpreting & Translation at the University of Stockholm, Uppsala University, Heriot-Watt University and University of Galway, honorary guests and keynote speakers at the CLTS conference.

The 4th annual conference of the TSNI was hosted at the University of Galway on April 25-26, 2024. This year, the theme of the conference was “Translation and Creativity”, which mirrors our city’s proud tradition of combining grass roots creativity with the delivery of sophisticated arts and creative spectacles.
