The Department of Spanish & Latin American Studies employs Foreign Language Assistants on Traineeship contracts every year.

A traineeship for foreign language assistants offers a unique and enriching opportunity for individuals seeking to enhance their linguistic skills and cultural understanding. This program not only provides hands-on experience in teaching but also fosters personal and professional growth. 

The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures contains six disciplines, Classics, French, Gaeilge, German, Italian and Spanish, and also houses the subjects Celtic Civilisation and Old and Middle Irish and a degree programme in Global Languages.

We also offer modules in Chinese, and the combination of languages offered by our School provides an exciting range of possibilities for study extending from eight-century Ireland to modern Irish literature, from the ancient classical world to the globalized world of our present, stretching from Europe to Latin America and from Francophone North Africa to China. 

What is a Foreign Language Assistant? 

A foreign language assistant is typically a student or recent graduate who supports language teachers in educational institutions. Their primary role is to assist in language instruction, help improve students' speaking and listening skills, and bring a native speaker's cultural perspective to the classroom.

6.  The traineeship provides a monthly remuneration of €1,600–€1,800, a basic amount  to cover the cost of living in Galway. The appointment shall run from 1 September to 30 April. The traineeship includes a probationary period and a performance assessment. Subject to satisfactory performance, the traineeship may be renewed for a maximum of two consecutive academic years. 

Typical Responsibilities 

·    Assisting teachers in language classes by conducting conversation practice and oral assessments. 

·    Preparing teaching materials and resources. 

·    Organizing cultural activities and events to enrich the learning experience. 

·    Providing insights into the language's culture and customs. 

Eligibility and Application Process 

Eligibility criteria can vary depending on the country and institution offering the traineeship. Generally, candidates should have: 

·      A good command of the target language (English or Irish). 

·      A strong interest in cultural exchange and teaching. 

·      Relevant academic background or experience in language studies, preferably Spanish. 

The application process involves submitting a one-page CV to spanish@universityofgalway.ie, and possibly recording a class plan in Spanish and a personal statement in English. The programme also requests 2 letters of reference.
