For Managers

Engaging Individuals for Work Paid on Timesheets
Managers engaging individuals for Work Paid on Timesheets. Before engaging the services of any individual, it is crucial for managers to understand the distinctions between employee and 'self-employed individuals. This understanding ensures compliance with relevant regulations and establishes appropriate payment processes.
Employee vs. 'Self-employed'
When engaging individuals for work, it is important to determine whether they should be classified as employees or 'self-employed.' If the manager believes the engagement to be employment, the individual will be paid as a PAYE (Pay As You Earn) employee and processed through the Payroll system. Proper classification is vital to adhere to legal requirements and ensure accurate payment procedures.
By accurately categorising individuals, managers can facilitate seamless payment processes and ensure compliance with tax, social welfare, and employment regulations. Clear understanding of the distinction between employees and 'self-employed' individuals helps establish the appropriate payment arrangements and minimize potential complications.
Please note that the classification process may involve considering various factors such as the degree of control exercised over the work, provision of equipment, the presence of a contract, and the nature of the working relationship. Consulting HR resources can provide further guidance in determining the appropriate categorisation, please visit the HR website here.
By establishing a clear understanding of the employment status of individuals, managers can maintain compliance and foster effective payment processes that align with legal and regulatory requirements.
