Supporting Employees During Long-Term Absence 

The University recognises that some health conditions may result in a prolonged absence from work. 

During periods of long-term sick leave, employees will continue to be supported through a range of services, processes and financial supports designed to assist recovery and facilitate a return to work where possible. 

Support may include: 

  • Regular and supportive contact with your manager
  • Guidance from the HR Sick Leave Team
  • Occupational Health assessments
  • Critical Illness Protocol (CIP)
  • Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR)
  • Employee Assistance Service (EAS)
  • Return-to-work planning and workplace accommodations where appropriate 

Occupational Health Support 

The Occupational Health Service provides independent medical advice to support employees and the University during periods of illness and recovery. 

Occupational Health may assist with: 

  • Fitness for work assessments
  • Long-term absence reviews
  • Workplace accommodations
  • Return-to-work planning
  • Critical Illness Protocol applications  

Critical Illness Protocol (CIP)

The Critical Illness Protocol provides enhanced sick leave supports for employees who are absent due to a serious illness or significant injury.  

Employees may be eligible for: 

  • Up to 183 calendar days on full pay
  • Followed by up to 182 calendar days on half pay
  • Subject to a maximum of 365 paid sick leave days in a rolling four-year period 

Applications require medical evidence and an Occupational Health assessment.

Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR) 

Where an employee has exhausted their paid sick leave entitlement, they may be eligible for Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR), subject to qualifying conditions.

TRR may be available where: 

  • The employee has the required service of 2 years 
  • There is a reasonable prospect of a return to work
  • Occupational Health supports a return-to-work outcome

Employee Wellbeing Support 

The Employee Assistance Service provides confidential counselling, information and support for employees and members of their household over the age of 16 experiencing personal or work-related difficulties.
