Key Terms and Definitions
Medical Certificate
A medical certificate is a document issued by a registered medical practitioner confirming that an employee is medically unfit for work due to illness or injury for a specified period.
GP – General Practitioner
A GP is a registered medical doctor who provides primary healthcare services, including the diagnosis and treatment of illness, medical advice, and the issuing of medical certificates where appropriate.
Certified Sick Leave
Sick leave supported by a medical certificate.
Uncertified Sick Leave
Short-term sick leave that does not require a medical certificate, subject to policy limits.
Critical Illness Protocol (CIP)
Enhanced sick leave provisions available for certain serious illnesses or injuries.
Temporary Rehabilitation Remuneration (TRR)
A payment that may be available after paid sick leave has been exhausted and specified criteria are met.
Occupational Health Physician (OHP)
An independent medical practitioner providing advice regarding fitness for work and workplace supports.
Illness Benefit
A payment provided by the Department of Social Protection to eligible employees during a period of illness.
Rolling Period
The look-back period used to calculate sick leave entitlements. Uncertified sick leave is assessed over two years, while paid sick leave is assessed over four years.
