Research activity is informed by University policy, in particular the aims and objectives of the current University of Galway Strategy (2020-2025) and the College of Science and Engineering Strategy (2021-2026) with a mission to foster sustainable development and contribute to innovation and commercialization. Within the School of Engineering the research activity is aligned with five subject areas of Biomedical, Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Computing (EEC), Energy and Mechanical, and focused on priority research areas of Innovation for health, Decisive data, and Sustainable futures.

The School of Engineering are hosts to two national research centres:

  • CÚRAM Research Ireland Centre for Medical Devices
  • Construct Innovate, Ireland’s national Research Centre for Construction Technology and Innovation (funded by Enterprise Ireland)

The School’s staff are co-PIs and funded investigators (FIs) in other national Research Ireland centres, such as Insight (Data Analytics), MaREI (Energy, Climate, and Marine Research & Innovation), Lero (Software), NexSys (Next Generation Energy Systems), I-Form (Advanced Manufacturing) and iCRAG (Applied Geosciences). Our staff provide leadership and actively contribute to research and innovation within the University’s Ryan Institute, Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation and the Data Science Institute.
