Dr Marcus Keane

Biography

Dr. Marcus Keane founded the Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable Engineering (www.iruse.ie ) in 2000. IRUSE is affiliated to the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway (http://www.ryaninstitute.ie/). IRUSE focuses on the systematic development and deployment of whole building and reduced order energy simulation models to underpin optimised operation of energy systems in buildings utilising a range of software/hardware applications/systems such as 3-D CAD modelling software, whole building (EnergyPlus) and wireless Building Management and Automation Systems (BMS/BAS). Dr. Keane served as Scientific Director and Co-PI of the ITOBO SFI SRC (2006-2012). Dr. Keane is the national academic representative and Co-PI within the Irish I2E2 (www.i2e2.ie) and IERC (www.ierc.ie) technology centres relating to energy efficient buildings. Dr. Keane is the President and affiliate member of IBPSA Ireland (http://www.nuigalway.ie/ibpsa/board.html

IRUSE is the Irish representative on the International Energy Agency (IEA) Annex 60 specifically responsible for the development and utilisation of Modelica models in building operation (http://www.iea-annex60.org/ ). Dr. Keane is also the academic member of the SEAI (www.seai.ie ) Energy Investment Advisory Committee (EIAC) and an advisor to the National Standards Authority Ireland relating to energy efficient buildings policy and national EU directive commitments.

 

Dr. Keane has published over 100 scientific/technical papers and secured in excess of €2.5 million in research grants in 2007-2013. IRUSE industrial partners include Intel Ireland, IBM, Hewlett Packard, DePuy Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific, D'Appolonia Spa, UTRCI, Arup, RPS Consulting and Irish SME;'s that include Cylon Controls Ltd., Enerit, Wirelite, Vector FM, EI Electronics. Academic Collaborators include: Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Cork Institute of Technology, Fraunhofer Institute ISE (Freiburg), Universidad de Cádiz, LBNL UC Berkeley, Mihajlo Pupin Institute, Politecnica delle Marche, Cardiff University.

Research Interests

My main interest lies in the study of environmental quality and energy efficiency within the built environment with a particular focus on energy systems in buildings.
