Radical Imaginations workshop held at University of Galway

The Centre for Law, Religion and Society and the Irish Centre for Human Rights were pleased to host Radical Imaginations: Rethinking Gender Justice in the Middle East and North Africa at the University of Galway on 6–7 July 2026.
The workshop was organised by Dr Tiba Bonyad, Postdoctoral Researcher on the ERC-funded BILQIS Project, and supported by the NUI Grant Scheme for Early Career Academics 2025.
Over two days, the workshop brought together scholars working across gender justice, Islamic feminism, feminist movements and non-movements, sexual autonomy, decolonial critique, political violence, autobiography and everyday resistance. Discussions moved between historical, legal, literary, political and embodied accounts of gender justice, with attention to how women’s agency is narrated, contested, recognised and made visible in different contexts.
The workshop was honoured to have a keynote lecture by Professor Ziba Mir-Hosseini, “From Islamic Feminism to Radical Imaginations: Reclaiming Gender Justice in an Age of Crisis,” offered an important frame for the workshop, reflecting on Islamic feminism, Musawah, Women Life Freedom, Gaza, and changing vocabularies of justice.
The final online panel opened further discussion on Muslim women’s representation, autobiography, everyday resistance and the politics of visibility.
