Coming to Galway for Short-Term Study

The School is developing opportunities for students from selected international universities to study or engage academically with University of Galway for a defined period.

Study Abroad opportunities are developed with partner institutions that have strong academic alignment and can accommodate participation within the professional and academic requirements of Nursing and Midwifery education.

Because our undergraduate programmes include substantial clinical education and are regulated by professional requirements, short-term study in Nursing and Midwifery does not operate in the same way as Study Abroad in many other subject areas.

Available opportunities in the future may include academic study, short-term educational experiences or other forms of collaborative learning

Are You Already Studying at Another University?

If you are currently enrolled at an international university and would like to spend part of your studies at University of Galway, your first step should normally be to check whether your home institution has an approved Study Abroad or exchange arrangement with University of Galway.

The availability of Nursing and Midwifery modules cannot be assumed solely because your university has a general institutional agreement with University of Galway.

Professional requirements, curriculum compatibility, module capacity and the structure of clinical education must also be considered.

Where a School-specific opportunity is available, information on eligibility and the application process will be provided through the relevant institutional arrangements.

Professional Development Through Individual Modules

Qualified healthcare professionals who are not seeking a complete postgraduate degree may be interested in studying an individual postgraduate module through a Professional Credit Award.

Professional Credit Awards allow eligible learners to complete selected modules from the School's postgraduate portfolio on a standalone basis.

Modules are generally offered at NFQ Level 9 and normally carry 5 or 10 ECTS, depending on the module.

They may be suitable for professionals who want to:

• develop knowledge in a particular area of healthcare practice;
• update or extend their professional skills;
• undertake accredited postgraduate learning without committing to a full programme; or
• begin building postgraduate academic credit where progression arrangements permit.

Important eligibility information

Most Professional Credit Awards in Nursing and Midwifery have professional-registration requirements.

For many modules, applicants must already be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or with another appropriate Irish healthcare regulatory body.

Internationally qualified healthcare professionals may be eligible where they are already based in Ireland and hold the professional registration required for the module.

A small number of modules may have different eligibility arrangements. Applicants should therefore check the entry requirements for the individual module before applying.

Looking for a Postgraduate Qualification?

The School also offers postgraduate education across Nursing, Midwifery, Healthcare and Evidence Science.

Our postgraduate portfolio includes specialist clinical programmes, professional education, advanced practice pathways and other taught postgraduate opportunities.

Eligibility varies considerably between programmes.

Some programmes are designed specifically for healthcare professionals working in Ireland and require:

• professional registration with NMBI or another relevant Irish regulator;
• access to an approved clinical practice environment;
• a specified level of post-registration professional experience; or
• employer or clinical-placement support.

Other programmes may be more accessible to international applicants who are not currently practising in Ireland.

International applicants should therefore review the entry requirements of the individual programme carefully before applying.

Postgraduate Research

International students can also explore postgraduate research opportunities with the School.

Our academic staff undertake research across Nursing, Midwifery, Healthcare and Evidence Science, with collaborations involving healthcare organisations, universities and research networks in Ireland and internationally.

Prospective research students should identify an area of research aligned with the expertise available within the School and review the requirements for postgraduate research study at University of Galway.
