Choosing Medicine at University of Galway was a deliberate decision, rooted in its reputation for medical excellence and my ties to the city. The programme combines strong academics with compassion and social responsibility. My involvement in health promotion and charity work was supported by the university, reflecting its focus on well-rounded clinicians.

Dr Evan O'Flaherty

Graduate of 2023

As an international student from Australia, moving to Galway to study Medicine was a big step. I completed electives at University Hospital Galway, Letterkenny, and abroad in Australia and India, gaining insights into global healthcare. From witnessing my first surgery to my first birth, I have gained invaluable experience, lifelong friendships, and the foundation to grow in my medical career.

Dr Shival Salgaonkar

Graduate of 2023

During my 6 years at University of Galway, I engaged deeply in academic life and societies. Early clinical exposure through special study modules helped bridge theory with patient care. I was also honoured to represent the university nationally and internationally as Students’ Union President. The School of Medicine fosters a strong sense of community, collaboration, and inter-professional learning values I now deeply cherish.

Lorcán Ó Maoileannaigh

Junior Doctor

Studying medicine at University of Galway offers a chance to learn in an excellent teaching hospital with support every step of the way. Lifelong friendships are formed, and students are encouraged to engage with the community from start to finish. The university fosters balance, allowing students to pursue hobbies and extracurriculars while receiving top-tier medical education.

Réiltín Ní Theimhneáin

Graduate of 2020

I would describe my experience at the University of Galway as positive and life-changing. I formed many fantastic friendships that lasted throughout my medical degree and will surely continue for many years. I look back fondly at my pre-clinical years which helped me establish a strong foundation to make the exciting transition to clinical placement. During my clinical years I had the opportunity to take part in simulation-based teaching, elective hospital placements and research allowing me to foster core skills that I will continue to use in my daily life and career.

Pedro Cafaro Loureiro

In 2024, I was awarded the HRB Summer Student Scholarship to undertake a research project focused on investigating executive function and memory in individuals with schizophrenia, aiming to better understand memory formation deficits in this population. During my eight-week project I gained hands-on experience in data analysis and collaborated closely with my supervisor in interpreting our findings, which thankfully supported our hypothesis.
