Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)
Our team: HOPE-ICU
Our team, HOPE-ICU is committed to Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in our research. Patients, families, and members of the public contribute to shaping research priorities, improving study design, and ensuring that research is relevant, meaningful, and patient-centred. PPI helps us focus on outcomes that matter most to patients and supports clearer communication and better research experiences.
Our research team works closely with clinical research facilities and translational institutes to support high-quality ICU research. We collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and maintain strong clinical partnerships within wider healthcare networks, as well as with academic and industry partners. Our work is supported by dedicated research infrastructure, including clinical trial support and data systems, enabling studies in critical care, sepsis, respiratory support, and emerging technologies such as AI.

Patient and Public Involvement Event 2025: From Bedside to Breakthrough
On 14 October 2025, the Clinical Research Facility Galway's Critical Care Cluster hosted the HOPE ICU Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) event at University Hospital Galway, supported by funding from PPI Ignite at the University of Galway. ICU survivors, families, carers and the multidisciplinary research team spent an afternoon together in open dialogue, shared learning and collaboration. The aim was to shape ICU research around real patient and family experiences. Participants explored current ICU research and shared their lived experiences to help guide future priorities. The event also aimed to strengthen partnerships and ensure that research reflects the needs and outcomes that matter most to patients and their families.
Thank You
Thank you to everyone who came, shared their stories and helped shape our priorities. Your feedback is already informing how we approach consent, communicate about research, and plan future studies.
Full Circle: From ICU Patient to Partner in Research
A Privilege to Be Heard
"I left feeling excited with regards to the future of ICU and as always very grateful to be included in such important conversation."
It was a privilege to take part in the ICU Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) event entitled ‘HOPE ICU Voices: From Bedside to Breakthrough’ in October 2025. It was lovely to be asked to give the patient perspective and, from that, to see how genuinely valued the perspective is in helping shape the future of ICU and the associated research.
Hearing about the exciting trials and studies currently underway was both inspiring and reassuring, particularly knowing they are focused on improving patient outcomes and experiences.
A bonus was meeting and speaking to the wonderful doctors and nurses who looked after me in my time in ICU back in October 2020.
