Changes Since Athena Swan Culture Survey 2023

What you Said vs What we Did

Several interventions have been introduced in response to issues raised through our 2023 Athena Swan survey. One of the core benefits of Athena Swan is that all actions are evidence-based and grounded in quantitative and qualitative analysis. This ensures that we are responding to the felt needs of staff on the ground.

Another advantage is that Athena Swan is based on a five-year cycle which can enable the Institutional Self Assessment Team (SAT) to drive programs and initiatives that may have been in the planning phase for some time within a timely manner. As a result, the Institutional Self Assessment Team and the OVPEDI have been working with colleagues across the University in units, including Human Resources, the office of the Deputy President and Registrar and others, to implement large and small-scale actions, interventions and programmes. Some examples are included below.

Athena Swan Survey

The Athena Swan Survey which is carried out during the application cycle is a very informative /substantive part of the application process. The survey is launched once every two years on all staff. The survey targets specific themes that highlight the overall culture of the environment. The survey also addresses any changes that may have been implemented such as Job Sizing and monitors the feedback on these changes.

The ISAT working groups then examine each of the themes in relation to their working group and analyse the findings.  The working group may issue an additional pulse survey targeting one of the areas to extrapolate more information and get a better understanding of the findings.

Our 2025 Survey was launched in January and the findings from the 2023 survey can be found in the Athena Swan Culture Survey Report 2023. The survey addresses the topics outlined below.

  • Career Opportunities & Supports
  • Promotions
  • Job Sizing
  • Workload
  • Performance Appraisals
  • Flexible Working
  • Carer Responsibilities
  • Family Leave
  • Culture & Leadership
  • Experience of Bullying, Discrimination & Sexual Harassment

Staff’s input is sincerely appreciated and are eager to use your responses to co-create the actions that we as a University will take to make sure University of Galway is inclusive, respectful environment for all.
