University of Galway is committed to embedding a zero-tolerance approach to racism and advancing race equality throughout our university. The Race Equality Framework and Action Plan 2023 – 2027 and its programme of work aims to drive cultural and organisational change to achieve this objective. The responsibility lies with each of us to robustly challenge racism, and to create and sustain an environment where white settled Irish and minority ethnic staff and students come together with different views, approaches and insights that leads to a richer, more creative and innovative environment for teaching, research, and the overall experience of staff and students.

The race equality programme of work is informed by the United Nation’s Call For Global Action To Eliminate Racism, A Union of Equality: EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020-2025, Ireland’s National Action Plan Against Racism 2023 - 2027, Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty, Higher Education Authority Act 2022 and Irish Council for International Students Speak Out Against Racism Report. Also, it is further informed by the Higher Education Authority Race Equality Policies including the Race Equality in the Higher Education Sector Report, Race Equality Implementation Plan 2022 -2024 and Anti-Racism Principles for Irish Higher Education Institutions.
