University of Galway has been making an active effort to improve gender equality within the organisation since 2015 when we began our work with Athena Swan. We have made strides in recent years and we recognise that we are still at an early stage in this important journey to gender equality.

A multifaceted approach is taken to embedding gender equality across University of Galway. This is based on the Public Sector Duty premise that instilling equality and respect within our institution’s culture and systems is the responsibility of all staff members and students. Five core pillars operate in a continuous cycle of development based on consultation, co-creation and analysis of data; implementation; embedding; monitoring, and re-evaluation on a regular basis to consider where improvements can be made in an ever evolving landscape.

Gender Equality Programme Pillars and Methodology 2Work on implementing our fourth Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP 4, 2025-30) within the University is underway, and will continue to be fully supported by the President and UMT as part of our determination to embrace diversity as a hallmark of our university community.
