The University of Galway is committed to the development of an institutional campus culture which is safe, supportive, consenting, compassionate, positive and respectful. We are actively working to implement the national Framework for Consent in HEIs: Safe, Respectful, Supportive and Positive: Ending Sexual Harassment in Irish Education Institutions. A key mechanism for this is the implementation of the Active* Champion programme in partnership with Active* Consent.

The Active* Champions are a network of student peer educators and leaders for initiatives on ending sexual violence and harassment, consent, sexual health & well-being, and active bystander skills.

Through training and support, the Active* Champions were expected to bring extensive sensitivity and knowledge of the issues surrounding the achievement of positive, active consent, the prevention of sexual violence and harassment, and the signposting to the supports required by people who have experienced sexual violence and harassment. The Active* Champions were involved in developing and supporting ending sexual violence and harassment initiatives running on campus and to engage in casual discussions with their peers on relevant topics.
