The Office of the Vice President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion provides support for staff networks and various inclusion initiatives to increase the feeling of openness, welcome and inclusion at University of Galway. There is also work ongoing to increase representation in leadership, decision-making, awareness raising, supports, and social events.
These programmes are under constant development with new and exciting training opportunities for staff to increase their knowledge and awareness in a variety of equality areas. Programmes Available
There are currently a variety of trainings on offer and in development, covering areas including LGBT+ and disability. These trainings are on offer on select dates each semester. Gender Identity, Expression and Diversity training
This workshop aims to support institutions to expand their capacity to support trans and non-binary students and staff. Participants will gain insight into experiences of trans and non-binary communities in Ireland today and build fluency in respectful language and terminology. In an open and safe space participants have the opportunity to ask any questions, explore strategies for becoming confident allies, and offer practical solutions for building more inclusive education for trans and non-binary individuals.
The training is delivered by Shout Out – they are a registered charity committed to improving life for LGBTQ+ people by sharing personal stories and running educational programmes.

Disability Awareness
Disability awareness training has been designed to support the roll out of the staff guide to Disability in the Workplace. The training is for all staff and in particular, any staff member who has a responsibility for another staff member i.e. line managers and PIs.
The workshop will include the following:
Information on the models of disability with particular emphasis on the social model in the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)
Participants will be encouraged to explore their own attitudes towards disability and accessibility
Identifying barriers students and staff with disabilities face and how to remove these barriers
An overview of the relevant legislation (Disability Act and Employment Equality legislation) and how it relates to the employment of people with disabilities in University of Galway
Why it is important that University of Galway promotes an inclusive environment for staff and students beyond mere compliance with legislation
An introduction to, and overview of the University of Galway Staff Guide to Disability in the Workplace (including disclosing a disability and requesting a reasonable accommodation)
The role & responsibility of University of Galway line managers and PIs in respect of supporting and accommodating a staff member with a disability
