Glossary of Terms
- Credits
- You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
- Module
- An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
- Subject
- Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
- Optional
- A module you may choose to study.
- Required
- A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
- Required Core Subject
- A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
- Semester

Putting Learning into Practice
One of the most innovative features of the programme is its emphasis on putting learning into practice, through seminars in acting, design and directing, through workshops with professional theatre companies, and through the option of internships with arts organisations and professional placements in Year Three.
Partnerships and Archives
Our students benefit from our partnerships with Irish theatre companies, including the internationally acclaimed Druid Theatre, which provide workshops as part of the Druid Academy programme. Students also have full access to Abbey Theatre Digital Archive, a unique resource that provides access to thousands of plays and videos.
Our BA in Drama, Theatre and Performance prepares you not only for a career in theatre but also in other cultural industries such as film, television, broadcasting, heritage, tourism as well as teaching, journalism, and academia.
- Many of our graduates have gone on to work on as professional actors, directors, lighting and set designers, creative producers, arts administrators, promoters, teachers and marketing executives.
- Our graduates have found work and careers with Druid, the Abbey Theatre, Landmark Productions, Branar, Fishamble, ANU, the Gate Theatre, Galway International Arts Festival, Dublin Fringe, Dublin Theatre Festival, Decadent, Element Pictures and more.
- Our unique mix of practical and theorical learning has created graduates who are critical thinkers as well as accomplished practitioners sought after by employers.
- We have tailored modules in final year of the degree on professional development and producing that teaches our students how to go about attracting funding for their own projects and how to develop competitive CVs and portfolios to gain employment.
- We have a pathway of modules designed for students who wish to take the MA in Education to teach the new leaving certificate subject Drama, Film and Theatre at second level.
In your third year, you’ll have the choice to study abroad for a semester experiencing another culture while still learning more theatre practice and theory. If you are studying a language this is an opportunity to be immersed in chosen language building fluency and confidence in speaking.
We currently have Exchanges with:
- Berea College, Kentucky
- University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
- Fraser Valley, BC, Canada
- Curtin, Perth, Australia
- New School, New York
- Tours, France
- Oviedo, Spain
- University of Illinois, Chicago
- University of Malta
Berea College, Kentucky offers free room and board to exchange students.
As part of your third year, you have the option to take a work placement with some of our partner organisations including Druid, Branar theatre company, the Abbey Theatre, The Gate Theatre, Decadent theatre Company, Galway Community Circus, Baboró Children’s Arts Festival.
- We try to place you with an organization in your area of interest and are open to you taking work placement beyond Galway and even abroad.
- You can go on work placement in first or second semester.
- Students have gone on to work for organizations they have been placed upon or gain invaluable experience that has led to future employment.
- Students will also be given the opportunity to gain a place on the SELECTED Programme run in partnership with Galway Community Circus in July which offers work experience in the festival, special lectures and workshops from international visiting artists and free tickets to festival shows.
