As part of the MAPPER Project, the team from the University of Galway (Oisín Callery, Billy Hamilton, Brendan Tobin, Pádraic MacDonnacha, and Pablo Merlo) met with Dr. Luz Marina Mantilla Cárdenas and Dr. Nicolás Castaño Arboleda of the SINCHI Institute in Colombia. Both were extremely supportive of the project’s goals to empower the Bora, Muinane, Okaina, and Uitoto communities in the Colombian Amazon through participatory GIS and GPS mapping of their ancestral territories. Collaboration with SINCHI has been instrumental in shaping the upcoming workshop in La Chorrera, ensuring that indigenous knowledge, scientific expertise, and cutting-edge mapping technologies come together to strengthen local self-determination and territorial rights.
