Postdoctoral researcher: Dr Sudhansu Bala Das

GLOSSAM project (2025), funded by Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics

Network analysis and linked data for early medieval manuscripts

Dr Sudhansu Bala Das is a postdoctoral researcher specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP), linguistics, and data science-driven text analysis. She earned her PhD from the National Institute of Technology Rourkela, India (2020–2024), where she explored low-resource Indian languages, linguistic structures, and data-driven approaches to machine translation. Her doctoral thesis, "Exploring the Efficacy of Machine Translation Systems for Indian Languages", made significant contributions to the field, leading to publications in high-impact journals and top-tier conferences, including CORE A venues.

Before pursuing her PhD, she accumulated four years of research experience at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India, where she worked on text and speech processing, networking, and real-time data science projects. She also has teaching experience at the undergraduate level. She completed her MTech at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, where she was awarded the university gold medal for academic excellence. Her research during this time focused on educational technology and computational thinking.

Her expertise and contributions to NLP, machine translation, and localization have been widely recognized, earning her prestigious accolades such as the AI Excellence Award (SAMVAD 2023) and the Best Localization Blog Paper Award (SAMVAD 2024).

As part of the GLOSSAM project, she will focus on network analysis, leveraging advanced NLP and data science techniques to explore, link, and analyze diverse datasets and manuscripts.

Funded by the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics as part of a collaboration with the University of Galway's Data Science Institute.
