Dr. Tripković presents research on Managing Suspicious Citizens as part of Crime, Punishment and Rights Seminar Series

Dr Milena Tripkovic visited the University of Galway School of Law on 30 October to meet with members of the Crime, Punishment and Rights Cluster to discuss her role as Associate Director of Internationalisation at The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research.
Dr. Tripokić, a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh Law School also presented her recent research paper - Managing “Suspicious” Citizens: Penal Power and Governance of Membership in the Political Community - as part of our Crime, Punishment and Rights Seminar Series.
This paper explored the intersections between citizenship and punishment by exposing ways in which penal law is instrumentalised to manage perceived threats that arise from suspicious citizens. It argues that penal laws in contemporary states are increasingly being used to guard the boundaries of acceptable performance of citizenship and manage the feelings of insecurity that arise from allegedly inappropriate behaviour of citizens.
