Initiate a Project

All resources for projects have been fully allocated for the 2025/2026 period. The Projects Portal is currently closed to new project assessment submissions and will reopen when capacity becomes available.

Buildings & Estates provides advisory support for project proposals and can offer guidance, identify potential constraints and assist with proposal development. While the Projects Portal is closed, advisory services remain available via projectreview@universityofgalway.ie.

Before submitting your project proposal, approval must first be obtained from your Head of Unit and UMT member. Your UMT member will review the list of proposals submitted by your unit and determine their priority ranking (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). Please note: prioritisation by your UMT member does not guarantee that a project will proceed. Buildings & Estates will review each proposal and advise on the next steps. Only project proposals that include valid budget codes will be considered. Proposals submitted without a budget code will not be assessed.

Project Approval Policy & Process (Works and Related Works)

Order of Magnitude Cost (OMC)
An OMC is a high-level cost estimate used to inform project feasibility and planning. It differs from a detailed Project Estimate which is more precise and developed later in the project lifecycle. OMCs are inherently indicative rather than exact and can often be presented as a range—typically a realistic low-to-high cost—to reflect the detail and accuracy limits at this early stage. OMCs are an early estimate at a point in time, subject to the level of detail available, future design, inflation and tender processes.
