Overview

This module is designed to equip the students with all the tools needed to be able to record the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Corundum, Diamond, Tanzanite, Topaz, Tourmaline) including materials of organic nature (e.g. Opal). The students will be able to identify the main organic and inorganic gemstones correctly and will also be introduced to diamond grading and gemstones marketing and valuations.

Applicants must be over 21 years of age. 

What you will Learn

This micro-credential is designed to give the students all the tools to be able to identify the main organic and inorganic gemstones correctly as well as to introduce them to diamond grading and gemstone marketing.  Also offering micro-credential EOS204: Recording Natural Gemstone Properties which is also a micro-credential from the Diploma in Gemmology.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Learn about the physical and optical properties of Diamond
  2. Grade diamonds by their colour and clarity
  3. Learn about different types of cuts and the parameters for ideal cuts
  4. Ability in checking the final grade of diamonds, i.e., Polish and overall appearance
  5. Learn the value of diamonds according to their weight
  6. Distinguish a natural diamond from substitutes, and study the treatment of enhancement of a diamond

  • Continuous Assessment (80%)
  • Oral, Audio Visual or Practical Assessment (20%)
