Overview

The module provides a broad introduction to the study of the crystallography and mineralogy of gemstones with hands-on experience with laboratory–based techniques to look and identify rough gemstone crystals. This module is designed to equip the students with all the tools needed to be able to recognize and scientifically record a gemstone’s morphology and symmetry. This module is designed for students to acquire familiarity with the seven crystal systems, twinning, and symmetry manipulations. The physical and chemical properties of minerals and gemstones are also examined.  This module is designed to introduce the student to general crystallography and silicate and non-silicate mineralogy.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be over 21 years of age. None specific (a general interest in geology, mineralogy and gemmology). The course is open to everyone and is designed for those with no previous training in gemmology.

What you will Learn

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify minerals/gemstones and crystal systems and classes.
  • Understand the applications of chemistry and physics to differentiate between minerals and to imagine the crystals in 3 dimensions.
  • Identify rough gemstones on the basis of crystal systems.
  • Learn about different properties of gemstones which will be helpful in their identification.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at undergraduate level 7.
