MSc Programme
Master's Degree -
Our new Structured MSc of Research in Chemistry was launched in September 2015. This program is designed to give graduates with a strong chemistry background the opportunity to develop their Chemistry knowledge and understanding further, to enhance their problem solving skills and to equip them with improved professional transferrable and research-related skills. The ultimate goal of this program is to prepare students for a career in industry or equip them with the required skills for pursuing a PhD program.
The course involves a significant research project that will be run jointly between NUI Galway and our national and international academic and industrial partners. In addition students will attend lectures that will focus specifically on problem-solving and professional transferrable skills. MSc Brochure 2023

Student Testimonials
Aoife Keegan | MSc Chemistry Research student
I chose the Structured MSc course at NUIG because it gives you a chance to experience full-time research in a laboratory environment, which is something not all undergraduate courses provide. It challenges you to be independent and take control of a project that is solely yours. The academic staff are extremely helpful in guiding you whilst also giving you space to make your own decisions and make the most of your experience. If research is an area you are interested in, this is the course for you.in Connect with Aoife
Austin Craig | MSc Chemistry Research Graduate
I'm very happy I chose to undertake my MSc. Chemistry course at N.U.I.G. The excellent facilities and teaching enabled me to develop my skills further as a chemist. This masters course was a perfect stepping stone into my current PhD positionin Connect with Austin
Ciaran O'Malley | MSc Chemistry Research Graduate
I found the MSc in Chemistry here at NUI Galway gave a thorough grounding in practical and theoretical knowledge required for a further career in industry or research, along with an in-depth introduction to many of the advanced facilities available here for research. Personally, the techniques and skills I acquired throughout the course were an invaluable part of being awarded a PhD position at NUIG after completion of the MSc. However I felt that even if I had moved into industry instead of a further degree, the comprehensive knowledge gained of analytical techniques and procedures would have greatly benefited me for my future career.in Connect with Ciaran
Patrick Gallagher | MSc Chemistry Research student
The research aspect of this course really appealed to me as I felt one more year of training would give me a better chance to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry of my choice. NUIG offers MSc students to work in a research-oriented industry for 8 months and I will be working for Eli Lilly & Company in Kinsale, Co. Cork. The course is dynamic and demanding, but this is essentially what MSc students are looking for!in Connect with Patrick
