The SOCIABLE study (Social Cognitive Interventions following Adverse Early Life Experiences) is researching ways to improve social thinking (known as social cognition) in adults, aged 18 to 35, who have experienced early childhood adversity. The study is being carried out by Prof. Gary Donohoe, School of Psychology, University of Galway.

The study will involve weekly one-to-one therapy sessions over the course of 8 weeks, with assessments before, during and after the completion of therapy. The therapy sessions will make use of virtual reality (VR) environments to allow participants to role-play and practice social scenarios.

Participants should be:

  • Aged between 18 and 35 years old
  • Have a self-reported history of childhood adversity.
  • Have self-reported difficulties with social situations.
  • Be community-based and clinically stable (in the opinion of primary treating team) – to ensure participant well-being and safety.
  • No current significant difficulties, functioning well.
  • Fluent English
  • Able to give consent
  • In the opinion of the treatment team able to engage in the study.
  • Based in Galway & surrounding area

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of organic Impairment
  • Currently in an active episode of illness
  • History of head injury with loss of consciousness > 5-minute duration
  • Drug/alcohol misuse in the preceding month
