Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to speak at 20th Anniversary Summer School at NUI Galway
Ms Fatou Bensouda, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court will deliver a public lecture during this year’s annual Summer School on the International Criminal Court taking place at NUI Galway from 24-28 June 2019. This special event marks the 20th anniversary of this world-renowned Summer School hosted each year by the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the University’s School of Law.
Prosecutor Bensouda will deliver a public lecture at 6pm on Monday 24 June 2019 in the Human Biology Building at NUI Galway. The title of the lecture is “Whither a ruled-based global order and the import of international criminal justice”. This event of jointly hosted by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and will be chaired by Supreme Court judge Peter Charleton.
The International Criminal Court seated in the Hague is the world’s principal court for the prosecution of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression. The Prosecutor plays a pivotal role in investigating and prosecuting serious atrocities and has overseen investigations of alleged crimes in countries such as Libya, Mali, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Georgia. This year’s ICC Summer School will comprise a series of lectures and seminars by leading practitioners and experts on international criminal law examining the law, policy, challenges and achievements of the International Criminal Court since its establishment.
“We are exceptionally honoured to welcome Prosecutor Bensouda to NUI Galway and to the 20th anniversary Summer School”, said Dr. Shane Darcy, Deputy Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights. “We look forward to gaining her insights on the Court’s role in a rule-based global order and on the challenges currently facing international criminal justice”.
