University of Galway is highly ranked in a number of Global University Rankings:

University of Galway is ranked 273rd in the 2025 QS World University Ranking (published 2024), and ranked 301-350 in the 2024 THE World University Ranking. The graph below details University of Galway progression in these two WUR rankings since 2011

QS Subject Ranking Results: In the most recent edition (April 2024) University of Galway achieved a global rank in 24 subjects with the subjects of English, Performing Arts and Nursing all ranked in the Top 100 in the world. 

  • English obtained a global rank of 89 and Performing Arts and Nursing were ranked at 51-100
  • Hospitality & Leisure Management, Law were ranked101-150 and Medicine was ranked in the Top 200
  • 6 subjects at University of Galway were ranked in the Top 250in the world – Archaeology, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Environmental Sciences, Civil & Structural Engineering and Education
  • A further 12 subjects at University of Galway were globally ranked between Top 300 to 640 in the world as detailed here.

 

QS Sustainability Rankings Results: In the 2024 QS Sustainability Rankings, University of Galway was ranked 120 (up from 161-170 in 2022) out of over 1300 global universities across 95 countries. More details are available here QS Sustainability Ranking Result

QS European Ranking: In Sept 2023, University of Galway was ranked 98th in Europe out of 690 institutions across 42 locations in the inaugural QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024. More details here

 

THE Subject Ranking: THE publishes rankings across 11 broad subject areas in Oct each year and University of Galway is ranked globally across all 11 subject areas, with its strongest ranks in Law (151-175), Arts & Humanities and Computer Science (top 250).

THE Impact Rank: University of Galway was globally ranked no 34th in the world in the 5th edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World IMPACT Rankings 2023, (no. 1 in Ireland) out of a total  of 1,591 institutions from 112 countries across the World. This Impact Ranking is the only global performance table that asses universities against the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

In the eleven individual SDGs that University of Galway participated in, it achieved a top 50 global ranking in 7 SDGs and a 100-200 rank in a further 4 as detailed here

QS World University Ranking 2025: University of Galway ranked 273rd in the world, out of ~1,500 global universities. 

 

10th April 2024 

QS World University Subject Rank 2024: University of Galway  achieved a global rank in 24 subjects, up from 23 in 2023, with a Top 100 Global Rank in 3 subjects. 

 

5th December 2023

University of Galway is ranked 120 in the second year of the QS Sustainability Ranking, up from 161-170 in 2022.

University of Galway retains it's global rank of 301-350 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024.

University of Galway continued to climb in the  5th edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World IMPACT Rankings 2023, andhas a global rank of 34 (no. 1 in Ireland, up from 47 in 2022) out of a total  of 1,591 institutions from 112 countries across the World.

22nd March 2023

QS World University Subject Rank 2023: University of Galway achieved a global rank in 23 Subjects, up from 22 last year - with Performing Arts at University of Galway achieiving a global rank of 101-120 for the first time. The subject of English at University of Galway also broke into the top 100 in the world, achieving a global subject rank of 91.

University of Galway has climbed in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2023,  into the 301-350 category, up from the 351-400 category last year.
