The University Management Team (UMT)
The University Management Team (UMT) is collectively responsible for the effective day-to-day management of the University.
President
UMT is chaired by the President. The role and responsibilities of the President as Chief Officer of the University is underpinned by national legislation – the Universities Act 1997, supplemented by the HEA Act 2022.
Under the legislation, the President manages and directs the University in its academic, administrative, financial, and human resources. He/she is answerable to the Governing Authority for the efficient and effective management of the University.
The membership of UMT and the roles and responsibilities of the individual members are illustrated in this organisation chart.
The membership of the University Management Team (UMT) reflects the work of all areas within the University. The UMT comprises the President and the heads of all academic and administrative areas, including the Colleges, the professional service units as well as key cross-cutting areas such as research and innovation, equality, diversity and inclusion, internationalisation and engagement.
The key duties of UMT are:
- the development of the strategic plan for the University (which is then ratified by Údarás na hOllscoile as the University’s Governing Authority).
- managing the resources of the University effectively (including human, financial, capital and non-capital resources) to achieve the strategic plan, consistent with public policy and with the policies and procedures approved by Údarás na hOllscoile
- enhancing the performance and reputation of the University consistent with its values
- advising and supporting the President as Chief Officer of the University in his or her statutory, accounting and other functions
- reporting to and supporting Údarás na hOllscoile in performing its responsibilities as defined by legislation, Statutes and other regulations.
The UMT meets every two weeks. Items on its agenda reflect the diversity of the operational work in the University, including issues such as how to address student accommodation issues, developing new strategies (e.g. the Student Success Strategy) and policies (e.g. the hybrid working policy), considering the University’s financial position, responding to unexpected developments like the COVID-19 pandemic and finalising key reports on the University’s activities and governance for the Higher Education Authority.
Through the President, as the University’s Chief Officer, the UMT is answerable to Údarás na hOllscoile for the efficient and effective management of the University. Here is the October Report from the President and UMT reported to Údarás na hOllscoile at its October Meeting. Please see the Governing Authority October Newsletter for updates.
