On July 11-14^th 2016, a group of students in the MA in Gender, Globalisation and Rights went on a field trip to Geneva, Switzerland organised by Professor Niamh Reilly and Mary Clancy with the support of Gillian Browne.  Geneva was chosen as the site of the Head Quarters of the UN in Europe and home of the UN Human Rights Council. On the trip the students observed the review of Turkey’s women’s rights record by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.  They also had the opportunity to meet with María Muñoz Maraver, the Human Rights Programme Director at the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and researchers at the Gender Centre of the Graduate Institute, Geneva,

Professor Elisabeth Prügl and Dr. Christelle Rigual who spoke about their comparative research on women and peacebuilding. Katie Hennessy, an M.A. student who participated said that, ‘The trip to Geneva was a great way to see how the theory which we had learned during the course of our studies was applied in practice.  For example, the processes taking place in the U.N., including the dialogue during Turkey's review under CEDAW, civil society engagement and field research undertaken by academics in the graduate school’.  These few days in Geneva allowed the students to view human rights in practice, and gave them insight into the professional projects undertaken by organisations, which they may participate in, in their future workplace environments.
