Sustainability
Sustainable NUI Galway
Sustainability is one of the core values that defines NUI Galway’s purpose as a university and is a central part of our planning for conferences that take place on campus.
We address sustainability from environmental, social and economic perspectives and continually strive to create the best environment possible for event attendees by utilising the Learn, Live and Lead model and implementing the principles of sustainability across all our venues
NUI Galway was awarded the internationally recognised Green Flag in March 2019.
The Green Flag award recognises the University’s long term commitment to continuous environmental improvement and rewards the work undertaken across the campus to promote sustainability in each of five themes, including energy, waste, water, travel and biodiversity.
Sustainable Galway
Galway is listed in the Top 20 Destinations of the Global Destination Sustainable Index, a rating system designed to recognise responsible practices in the business tourism and events industry.
This rating, coupled with the internationally recognised Green Flag accreditation for promoting sustainability and reducing its environmental impact, makes NUI Galway one of the most sustainable conference venues in Ireland.
Transport & Parking
NUI Galway is committed to the promotion of sustainable transport to and from the campus and has implemented numerous initiatives to enhance the walkability of our campus, improve cycling facilities, expand our access to public transport and offer park and ride facilities.
There are 20 electric charging points across the campus and access to a bike share scheme across the city and campus where we encourage cycling to campus.
Biodiversity at NUI Galway
The University strives to sustain a healthy environment and community for staff, students and visitors alike.
The University is a partner with the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and boasts its own Biodiversity Trail, developed as a recreational resource and as a health and wellbeing initiative to connect people to nature and help them feel restored.
Campus Catering
Our campus caterers provide award-winning catering for all types of events and work to achieve best practice in reducing food waste and offering biodegradable take away materials where necessary.
Our caterers offer menus showcasing local producers, we define local as produce that’s grown, reared or produced within 50 miles of each kitchen.
Go Paperless with your Event
Mobile Conference App NUI Galway Conference & Event Centre provides a recommended event app to conference organisers hosting events on campus.
The App provides attendees with both content and powers face-to-face connections.
Event organisers are given the tools and resources to provide attendees with rich engagement opportunities and key content before, during, and after their event.
This also has the added benefit of reducing or eliminating print at conferences while supporting a sustainability strategy.
