Mary

Mary Deely |   Project Officer in Public Engagement in STEAM, CÚRAM

This course strikes a good balance between combining scientific concepts and artistic responses to these concepts. The course lead, Dr Jane Conway, delivers the course content in such a clear and stimulating way. It was a great opportunity to deliver an artistic project based on the theme of ‘Perceptions’ – I made a short documentary (‘Matrescence’) which screened at film festivals internationally and was nominated for 2 awards. It was wonderful to share knowledge with classmates who came from a variety of backgrounds and practices and to see all of our work showcased at an exhibition at the end of the course. Also the course benefitted my work in public engagement in CÚRAM.

The micro-credential “Scientific Arts”, led by experimental psychologist Dr Jane Conway, allowed me to integrate specialized and specific knowledge that richly contributed to my ongoing research in arts and creative technologies. This knowledge opened interesting and fruitful insights about the underpinned psychological processes when engaging with art and allowed me to use and interrogate technological scientific devices as artistic mediums. The micro-credential was well balanced with theoretical and practical resources and promoted ongoing discussions between the participants, approaching different disciplines and interests. The micro-credential ended up with a final exhibition at the university gallery which offered different ways of representing scientific topics through artistic methods. As a result, the work I developed in this experience -under the insightful supervision of Dr Conway- greatly informed my PhD proposal and allowed me to receive two artistic residencies at CREW (Galway) and KIT-ITAS (Germany).
