Welcome to French
We teach a wide range of courses related to France, and Francophone cultures in several Colleges of the University. We teach written and oral language courses, literature, civilisation, linguistics, and other modules which develop students' understanding of French and Francophone culture. We mainly teach through French.
Many of our courses include a semester or longer in a French-speaking country. Students often go to study in one of our partner universities in France or Belgium. Some students find placements as language assistants in French schools. This time abroad gives our graduates intercultural skills, allowing them to travel and adapt beyond university. Our graduates are mature, thoughtful and capable. They can communicate in French at a high level and understand cultures different from their own.
Staff members are active in a number of areas of research, including Medieval Literature, Autobiography, Francophone Literatures (Québec, Antilles), History of Publishing, History and Politics of French Decolonisation, History and Sociology of French Sport and Leisure, 19th-Century French Studies, Gender Studies, Translation, French Language Teaching and New Technologies, Literature and Spirituality.
We have five reciprocal exchanges of language assistants with universities in France, as well as a wide range of student exchanges under ERASMUS with ten universities in France and two in Belgium. In addition, English Language Assistant posts are on offer within the primary/secondary education system in France as part of the Franco-Irish Language Assistant scheme.
