PhD researchers Daniel Gallen and Elliot Gallogly in the School of History and Philosophy organised the University of Galway’s first Queer Studies Symposium on August 4th 2026 to coincide with Galway Pride Week. The University played host to an interdisciplinary cohort of researchers from both Ireland whose work focuses on LGBTQ+ communities and topics. Twenty-two scholars presented their work across eight panel sessions, as well as a special workshop by representatives from Trans Healthcare Action speaking about their peer-led transgender health clinic Kindred. The keynote panel saw four longtime LGBTQ+ activists – Micheál Kerrigan, Sara Phillips, Orla Egan and Nuala Ward – reflect on their activism journeys over the years. The symposium was entirely funded by the School of History and Philosophy.
