Studying in the BA Music course in NUIG has not only enriched my music knowledge, but it has also introduced me to like-minded people who have become great friends throughout our four years of study. The course’s wide range of modules opened my eyes to areas of music I had not thought about or encountered before studying in NUIG. As I am now at the end of the degree, I have come to realise that some of these specific modules I was introduced to through the BA Music have hugely influenced where I aspire to go with my music career.

During my 3rd Year of the Music Degree Programme, I had the opportunity to study abroad in the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA in 2022. I studied a variety of music modules such as Theory, Counterpoint, Wind Percussion Techniques and Piano Technology. The music modules were really interesting. I was introduced to the history of wind and brass instruments, conducting, music theory, composition and learning about tuning a piano and the action of a piano. The University facilities are incredible. I had the opportunity to travel and meet some amazing people from all over the world. The study abroad experience is not just about the material presented to you in class, there is so much more to it that is of equal importance. I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

I chose the BA (Music) Degree Programme at NUI Galway because I wanted a diverse music education which this course most definitely provides. It gives its students a strong foundation to build upon their own creative endeavors, while also opening doors to possible new music interests. This course is personal and hands-on. It has given me cognizance academically and creatively that I can ascend into my future career with confidence.

I chose the BA (Music) Degree Programme at NUI Galway because it offers a range of modules which provides its’ students with a solid foundation in all aspects of music including, music history, theory, performance analysis, Irish traditional music, composition while not forgetting music practice, sound technology and choral skills among others. Personally, I have found this hugely beneficial as a prospective teacher these skills will prove very useful in my own career path. Each student is afforded the opportunity to explore the many areas of music which is imperative for students to discover where their true passion lies, be it conducting, teaching, composing etc. and therefore inform their future career choices. As the creative arts thrive in this vibrant city so too are its’ music students immersed in opportunities to get involved in events and avail of a plethora of concerts to enjoy. I am thoroughly enjoying working under the team of lecturers and guest musicians who bring this course to life in a devote and professional manner.

I chose the BA (Music) Degree Programme at NUI Galway because I thought that the course gave a good grounding of core modules in first year, which then allows students to branch out into more specialised areas in the later years of the degree. This enables students to obtain an essential level of knowledge before specialising in areas of particular interest. This, combined with the supervision and guidance of a very knowledgeable, experienced and encouraging team of lecturers makes the BA (Music) Degree a definite option for any aspiring musician.

I chose the BA (music) Degree Programme at NUI Galway because I wanted to develop my understanding of music. The course provides the well-rounded music education I was looking for, while also granting a variety of specialisation opportunities. Importantly, the course benefits from Galway's rich music tradition, which I believe distinguishes it from other music courses. Overall, I have really enjoyed the course and it has really helped me to become a better musician

I chose the BA (Music) Degree Programme at NUI Galway because it offers a wide range of subject which captures all aspects of music. The small teaching environment creates a positive atmosphere and enhances participation in the class. The programme, so far, has offered me amazing opportunities such as having an original composition to be played by The ConTempo String Quartet, meeting well-known Irish musicians and learning new skills. The experience as a whole has been extremely positive and I am looking forward to the journey which degree will take me.
