Meet the CDP-CDP consortium
Dr Sheena McHugh
Dr Sheena McHugh is a Senior Lecturer and health services researcher at the School of Public Health. Her primary areas of interest are implementation science, quality improvement and chronic disease management.
Dr Sheena McHugh is a Senior Lecturer and health services researcher at the School of Public Health. Her primary areas of interest are implementation science, quality improvement and chronic disease management.
Sheena leads the Health Implementation Research Hub at the School of Public Health in UCC. In 2020, Sheena was awarded a prestigious HRB Research Leader Award to develop a national hub for implementation research in Ireland and build much-needed capacity among researchers and practitioners through training and network-building activities.
Sheena’s research focuses on efforts to improve the quality of health services. Her research has focused on barriers and facilitators to implementing evidence-based interventions and designing, tailoring and assessing the effectiveness of implementation strategies. She has carried out extensive research on the organisation and quality of diabetes care in Ireland..
Sheena trained originally in psychology, graduating from University College Dublin. She completed an MSc in Health Psychology at University College London and was the first UCC graduate of the HRB Scholars Programme in Health Services Research, now known as SPHeRE. She has undertaken extensive training in implementation science and completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Implementation Science at Trinity College Dublin. Sheena is a Fulbright Scholar and worked as a visiting scholar at the Gillings School of Public Health, University of North Carolina. She leads the Irish Implementation Science Training Institute, a blended training programme in implementation science at University College Cork. She is a member of the international Society for Implementation Research Collaboration and is an Associate Editor at BMJ Quality and Safety.
