Students who have chosen to study abroad for the full academic year may wish to take a double degree in one of our partner institutions. The double degree programme allows students to be awarded a degree from their home university and their host university – essentially a student can be awarded with two separate degrees once they have met certain criteria.

The courses are coordinated for both universities and are mutually credited. They therefore do not represent separate courses, but rather link the individual courses of the respective partner universities with one another.

The duration of stay in a double degree program is usually at least 2 semesters. Through the stay at the partner university, you will experience a different teaching and learning culture in an academic environment as well as deeper insights into another country, its language and its culture. You will benefit from these experiences for a lifetime, both personally and professionally.

How does the Double Degree programme work?

The partner university recognises the student’s prior learning (a minimum of two academic years = 120 ECTS), which will then allow them to transfer into final year at the host university.  On completion of the year abroad, the student will then return to University of Galway, register for fourth year and continue with their degree studies.

My Erasmus experience at the Burgundy School of Business in Dijon was truly unforgettable. In my second semester, I chose to specialise in International Business Management, which offered an insightful and engaging perspective on the global business landscape. The school itself exceeded my expectations, with inspiring professors, a dynamic learning environment, and strong international connections. But my time at BSB was about more than just academics, it was a deep dive into French culture and a chance to build lasting friendships. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend pursuing a double degree at BSB to anyone seeking both academic and personal growth.

The ICN double degree program provided an exceptional opportunity to gain an additional accreditation. We were integrated with a group of around 70 international students who were pursuing both the standard and double degrees, this integration offered us a unique perspective alongside achieving an added qualification. Therefore, I highly recommend the double degree to anyone considering it. The program spans two semesters, which means spending an entire year abroad, a benefit in itself. Living in the heart of Europe for a year while studying alongside individuals from various cultures and backgrounds was invaluable. My goal was to make the most of the Erasmus experience by fully immersing myself in the academic and cultural opportunities it offers. I can’t recommend it enough and the ICN double degree was just another addition to it all.

Deciding to a double degree at the Burgundy School of Business (BSB) in Dijon is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The school was full of international students and provided a great platform for forming friendships and connections. The opportunity to experience a different culture with lots of different people was amazing and I have made some friends for life. I’m really happy I did the double-degree as it helps me to differ from others when it comes to my career, job interviews and Masters applications. I chose to do the International Business stream in my second semester which was very interesting and literally international as many of my classmates were from different parts of the world. During both semesters we had no classes on a Friday, allowing lots of time to make travel plans or simply to enjoy a long weekend. The year abroad really helped me to develop my academic skills and to experience huge personal growth. I think its an unbelievable opportunity that we are fortunate to have, and I would recommend pursuing the double-degree.

Spending my Erasmus year at the Burgundy School of Business (BSB) in Dijon, France, was an unforgettable experience. While at BSB, I earned a double degree and chose to specialise in Wine Tourism within the Bachelor of Business Management & Marketing program. This was an opportunity that was completely unique and something I couldn't have pursued back in Ireland to the same extent. The Wine Tourism specialisation was incredibly immersive, with field trips, wine tastings, and in-depth lessons in viticulture. Studying in the heart of Burgundy, a region renowned for its wine heritage, brought my studies to life and made learning hands-on and exciting. The small class sizes also encouraged interactive learning, with professors who were truly invested in our success and who were always ready to support us in any way they could. Outside the classroom, I travelled around Europe, make lifelong friends, and fully embrace the French language and culture enabling me to grow academically, personally and professionally in ways I never expected. I highly recommend the double degree at BSB to any future Erasmus student while abroad. It’s the perfect added bonus to an incredible experience!
