On Thursday 27th March 2025, a group of postgraduate students from the School of Law visited Limerick Prison. Limerick Prison is a closed, medium security prison for adult males and females. It serves as the committal prison for Clare, Limerick and Tipperary for men and for all Munster countries for women.

Students participated in the prison visit as part of their Imprisonment and Rights class with Dr. Róisín Mulgrew. They were joined by students from the LLM in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights programme, two doctoral researchers and a visiting post-graduate law student from the University of Bordeaux. During the visit, they discussed issues of operations, rights protection, overcrowding, healthcare, visits and regime with staff and management in both the male and female prisons.

Governor Andrew McCarthy spoke to the students about the impact of trauma, homelessness, addiction and mental health on the experience of criminal justice and imprisonment for women, and the steps being taken to address these issues within the prison.
