O’Shaughnessy Pedestrian Bridge

O’Shaughnessy Pedestrian Bridge

The O’Shaughnessy Bridge was constructed in 2012.It is part of the Smarter Travel initiative and provides a vital link between Fisheries Field and the University of Galway Campus. The project was promoted on a partnership basis by University of Galway and Galway City Council. Following a statutory requirement (all bridges in Ireland) for an in-depth inspection in 2018, deterioration of the surface coating of the structural steelwork was recorded along with other minor defects.

In Summer 2023, a contractor was procured to undertake repairs. Additional specialist coatings were applied to all steelwork. This will extend the life of the bridge which is critical as it is on the most used pedestrian route into campus from the City Centre.

Works had to be undertaken, using floating work platforms, while maintaining use by rowing clubs and protecting the river from pollution (specialist coating to structure). A specialist scaffolding design was required above and under the deck.
