Flood Mitigation Project

Distillery Channel – Phase 3

2023

The Distillery Channel was constructed circa 1830 and is a protected structure.

It is an open channel that runs through the heart of the Campus, and into which discharges the storm water from the Campus, and most of the storm water run off from the western side of Galway City.

The risk of flooding to the University posed by the failure of the Channel is highlighted in the University of Galway’s flood risk management strategy document. Phase 3 is 100 meters long and entailed;

  • Dredging and repairing the channel walls
  • Replacement of circular culverts with box culverts
  • Reconfigure a bridge crossing, thereby making it safer and universally accessible
