Athletics Club Lunch in Honour of Padraig Griffin
UCGAC /UGAC Reunion and Tribute to Padraig Griffin
Aula Maxima, University of Galway, 14th Nov 2024
A reunion for the University of Galway Athletics Club, bringing together past and present members for a memorable celebration, was held on in the Aula Maxima on Thursday 14 October, 2024.
Des Ryan, Director of Sport, University of Galway, described the event "as a terrific opportunity for current athletes to connect with former members and hear stories about the evolution of both the club and the sport. We were delighted to welcome so many influential figures in Irish athletics and Sport Ireland, including Mr. John Cronin (President of Athletics Ireland), Mr. Hamish Adams (Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland), and Mr. John Foley (Chair of Sport Ireland)."
Guest of honour, Padraig Griffin, BA 1963, was presented with an Excellence Award by the University of Galway Athletics Club, recognising his exceptional contribution to Irish athletics. A former Olympic coach and President of Bord Lúthchleas na hÉireann (BLÉ), Padraig’s impact on athletics has been profound at national, regional, and university levels. He was pivotal in founding Ballinamore AC in 1967 and numerous other clubs in Connacht, serving as BLÉ President from 1991 to 1994. As a coach, Padraig nurtured the talents of Olympians Eddie Leddy (Munich 1972, Montreal 1976) and Colin Griffin (Beijing 2008, London 2012).
Padraig also made a significant mark on Connacht Schools Athletics and the Irish Schools Athletics Association from 1964 to 1990, contributing to the development of cross-country and track-and-field programs and organising coaching courses. One of his greatest achievements was his role in unifying Irish athletics through the creation of Bord Lúthchleas na hÉireann, ensuring Irish athletes could compete internationally.
Reflecting on the event, Ryan concluded "We were proud to be able share the recent successes of the club and its ongoing growth which has been built on the stalwart work of former members down the years. I would like to extend a special thanks to Murt Coleman for organising the event and we look forward to hosting many more of these events in the future.
