At NUI Galway, the ranks of honorary conferees include, among many others, Nelson Mandela, Hilary Clinton, Professor Edward Said, Enya, Anjelica Huston and Fionnula Flanagan. Ever year a select number of outstanding individuals join this illustrious list.

The Honorary Conferring ceremony took place on Friday, 29 June in the Bailey Allen Hall.

2012 Honorary Conferees

	Sebastian Barry, award-winning novelist, poet and playwright, will be conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Literature (honoris causa). Read more about Sebastian Barry.
	Maureen Dowd will be conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Literature (honoris causa). Maureen is an author of two bestselling books, Bushworld: Enter at Your Own Risk (2004) and Are Men Necessary? 	Irial Finan will be conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). Irial is Executive Vice President, The Coca-Cola Company and President of Bottling Investments responsible for managing a multi-billion dollar bottling business, Bottling Read more about Irial Finan.
	The Honourable James Flaherty PC, MP will be conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). Minister Flaherty is third-term Member of Parliament for Whitby–Oshawa (Ontario). He serves as Canada’s Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. He is a Governor of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
