Book - Journey Through The Brain
About the book
journey through the brain is a colouring book that has been developed to spark young people’s interest in the science of the brain and its connection to human emotion, mental health and well-being. As researchers from the Department of Psychiatry in RCSI, this book is our way of sharing what we have learned about the brain and bringing the mysterious world of the brain to life.
journey through the brain does a number of things:
- It outlines key information about the brain in short and simple language.
- It uses visual images to represent complex structures, mechanisms, and connections within the brain
- It can play a role in promoting well-being. Colouring can help to distract people from their anxieties or worries.
About the team
The book was funded by the Health Research Board through its Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme. The funding was awarded to Professor David Cotter and his research group to produce a colouring book for young people to help them learn more about neuroscience. We also hope that adults might find it interesting! The project was led by Prof. Cotter and Dr Lorna Lopez and was supported by Professor Mary Cannon and Helen Coughlan from the PERL Group
The team was fortunate to enlist the artistic talents of Dr Eoin Kelleher, an RCSI graduate and illustrator, to create all of the images within the book. We're sure you'll agree that these beautiful, intriguing and evocative images bring the world of the brain to life.
Sophie Sabherwal has created additional notes for teachers which give the back story to these images and will be of great use to anyone who wishes to learn more about the science behind the drawings.
Secondary school teachers can order a copy for their school by emailing us at brainjourney@rcsi.ie.
For this project, we were also supported by Sophie Sabherwal, Alan Gallagher, Olivia Browne, Jenny Brady, Cara McVeigh, Gillian Markey and Catriona O'Grady.
