Úrscéal
Welcome to ÚRSCÉAL | Fáilte go ÚRSCÉAL
ÚRSCÉAL is a project to build an open-access TEI-encoded collection of the Irish-language novel for inclusion in the European Literary Text Collection (ELTeC), the state-of-the-art multilingual corpus of the European novel (1840-1920). ELTeC provides a collection of novel corpora that are comparable in nature, scope, and quality across several European languages: an essential condition for the creation of multilingual tools and methods of computational literary analysis. At the beginning of the project, in 2022, twenty European languages were represented in ELTeC, but Irish was not.
By creating an ELTeC-conformant, open-access corpus of the Irish-language novel to 1920, ÚRSCÉAL will resolve this gap, ensuring future users of ELTeC can consider the Irish-language novel in comparative analyses of the European novel, and clearing a path for dedicated computational analysis of the early tradition of the novel in Irish.
In addition to publishing the new collection of the Irish-language novel in ELTeC, this site offers users free access to the entire collection and individual novels in a range of formats (XML, EPUB, HTML).
The ÚRSCÉAL project team is Dr Justin Tonra (Principal Investigator) and Dr Pádraig Fhia Ó Mathúna (Research Assistant). The project was funded by the Strategic Research Development Scheme (2022) of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies at University of Galway.
Is tionscadal é ÚRSCÉAL a fhéachann le cnuasach d’úrscéalta Gaeilge atá ionchódaithe le TEI a chur ar fáil ar rochtain oscailte agus a chur san áireamh sa Chnuasach Eorpach de Théacsanna Liteartha (European Literary Text Collection, ELTeC), an corpas ilteangach úrscothach d’úrscéalta na hEorpa (1840–1920). Cuireann ELTeC cnuasach de chorpais úrscéalta ar fáil atá inchomórtais ó thaobh nádúir, scóipe agus cáilíochta de i roinnt teangacha Eorpacha: coinníoll riachtanach é seo chun uirlisí ilteangacha agus modhanna anailíse liteartha ríomhaireachtúla a chruthú. Nuair a seoladh an tionscadal sa bhliain 2022, bhí fiche teanga Eorpach san áireamh sa ELTeC, ach ní raibh an Ghaeilge ina measc.
Trí chorpas d’úrscéalta Gaeilge a foilsíodh roimh 1920 a chur ar fáil ar rochtain oscailte agus a thagann leis an ELTeC, réiteoidh ÚRSCÉAL an bhearna sin; cinnteoidh an tionscadal go mbeidh úsáideoirí an ELTeC in ann an t-úrscéal Gaeilge a mheas in anailísí comparáideacha ar an úrscéal Eorpach feasta, rud a réiteoidh an bealach don tsainanailís ríomhaireachtúil ar luaththraidisiún an úrscéil Ghaeilge.
Chomh maith le cnuasach nua d’úrscéalta Gaeilge a fhoilsiú sa ELTeC, tugann an suíomh seo rochtain saor in aisce d’úsáideoirí ar an gcnuasach iomlán agus ar úrscéalta aonair i raon formáidí (XML, EPUB, HTML).
Ar fhoireann tionscadail ÚRSCÉAL, tá an Dr Saerbhreathach Ó Tomhnra (Príomhthaighdeoir) agus an Dr Pádraig Fhia Ó Mathúna (Cúntóir Taighde). Is í Scéim Forbartha Taighde Straitéisí (2022) de chuid Choláiste na nDán, na nEolaíochtaí Sóisialta agus an Léinn Cheiltigh in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe a mhaoinigh an tionscadal.
