Biography

Dr Michael Martyn graduated with a BSc (hons) in Physics with Medical Physics in 2011, an MSc in Medical Physics in 2012, and a structured PhD in Physics in 2018, all from the University of Galway. His PhD focused on the applications of ultrasound imaging in radiotherapy, particularly in the treatment of prostate cancer, and quantification of the dosimetric effects with Monte Carlo techniques.

Upon completion of his PhD, Michael worked as a clinical medical physicist at University Hospital Galway, as part of the radiotherapy physics team, from 2018-2020. In August 2020, Michael took up a role as a Research Medical Physicist in the Blackrock Health Galway Clinic, working on the Horizon 2020-funded ORIGIN project. This work focused on the development of optical fibre-based dose imaging techniques for applications in adaptive brachytherapy. In March 2023 Michael took up a role as a clinical Medical Physicist in the University Limerick Hospital Group, as part of the diagnostic imaging and radiation protection group, before progressing to a Senior Medical Physicist within the same group. In January 2024 Michael took up his current role as a Lecturer / Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Galway. Michael is a professional member of the Irish Association of Physicists in Medicine.

Research Interests

Research interests include the physics of radiation therapy, medical imaging, and radiation protection. Previous research projects have focused on the development of Monte Carlo (MC) models for applications in radiation therapy, and the development of novel optical fiber-based radiation dosimetry / imaging systems.
