Fernando Fernández-Álvarez

Fernando has been developing taxonomic, phylogenetic and natural history studies on different marine and terrestrial invertebrate taxa. His main group of interest is cephalopods and his past studies ranged from taxonomy and DNA barcoding to reproductive biology and early development of eggs, embryos and paralarvae obtained both by natural spawning and in vitro fertilization. During his Ph. D. thesis, he pioneered in the development of dietary assessment of squid paralarvae through DNA metabarcoding of histology slides processed by Laser-Capture Microdissection. He was awarded with an Irish Research Council – Government of Ireland postdoc fellowship for the study of the genomic and specific biodiversity of oceanic squids through Next-Generation Sequencing methods.
