Biomedical Engineering at the University of Galway is home to one of Europe's leading concentrations of research expertise at the interface of engineering and medicine. Our 16 principal investigators lead programmes spanning biomechanics, mechanobiology, medical devices, biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, biofabrication, and computational and data-driven modelling.
We develop next-generation therapies and medical technologies - from implantable devices and advanced biomaterials to bioprinted living tissues. We also use these technologies to build experimental and computational  models of biological processes in human health and disease. Our research targets the management and treatment of chronic conditions in modern healthcare including cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, neurodegeneration, diabetes, and cancer.
Our research is supported by major national and international funders including the European Research Council, EU Horizon Europe, Research Ireland, and Enterprise Ireland, alongside direct partnerships with multinational and SME partners across the MedTech industry. The group currently comprises 70 PhD students and 25 postdoctoral researchers, with over 145 PhD graduates since 2004.
