Message from the Dean
The College of Science and Engineering comprises six Schools and two Research Institutes, which cover our principal areas of expertise in teaching and research.
Welcome to the College of Science and Engineering at NUI Galway. Our College comprises the School of Chemistry, the School of Computer Science, the School of Engineering, the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, the School of Natural Sciences, and the School of Physics. Thus, our College is an exciting and inter-disciplinary blend of Research, Education and Innovation across the full range of science and engineering areas. These span the applied to theoretical and blue-sky topics, from the ocean deeps to the distant reaches of space, and areas of science and engineering dedicated to improving health and wellbeing, realising potential through data and enabling technologies, and sustaining our planet and people.
We strive to provide an excellent, student-centred, and inclusive educational and university experience for all our students. Our programmes are progressive, diverse, and research-led. Through placement, fieldwork, and study abroad opportunities, our programmes empower students to develop critical thinking, employability, and leadership, as well as to fulfil their potential to be the next generation of change makers that deliver impact on our society, culture and economy. Our staff includes some of the world’s most influential or ‘most highly cited’ researchers and their unique specialisms and expertise are reflected in our programmes and research.
Drawing on the distinctive strengths of our region in areas such as medical technologies, marine ecology and enabling technologies, we work in partnership with business and industry to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to drive innovation, economic growth and research. We strive to conduct excellent and internationally renowned research and to communicate that research to the world to drive advancement and innovation and contribute to NUI Galway’s mission to serve the public good.
Driven by Research
The staff and post-graduate students of the College of Science and Engineering have a strong commitment to original research, both pure and applied, across a wide range of scientific areas. Many of our researchers are working at the leading edge of research in their fields and enjoy a prominent international reputation.
The College of Science and Engineering offers a range of research-led programmes at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Post-Doctoral levels. Our Science and Engineering training and research contributes significantly to knowledge generation, technology development and translation, and to our economic and societal development. Our researchers engage in a significant degree of academic and industrial collaboration, at regional, national and international levels.

We cherish the richness and diversity of our popular Study Abroad Programme which gives students the experience that they bring back to our community from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST), University of California, USA and John Carroll University, Ohio.
