Project Team
SAFER Project Team
The SAFER Project management team includes Prof Stuart Harrad and Dr Daniel Drage at the University of Birmingham, as well as Dr Harald Berresheim, Dr Marie Coggins, and Dr Martin Sharkey at The National University of Ireland Galway.
Prof Stuart Harrad
Professor Stuart Harrad from the University of Birmingham is a world-leading expert on the environmental fate and behaviour of persistent organic pollutants, with a particular focus on BFRs, and will act as the overall Principal Investigator and coordinator of the SAFER project. He has coordinated three further EPA research projects in Ireland – the WAFER, FUEL and ELEVATE projects dealing with various aspects of POPs in the Irish environment – and has led three EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network Projects – A-TEAM, ELUTE, and INFLAME – which focus on training new generations of scientists to tackle the hazards posed by persistent organic pollutants in the environment. SAFER will also benefit from interactions with the global network of research organisations working on the environmental implications of consumer chemicals in the waste stream provided by Harrad’s leadership of the EU-funded INTERWASTE project.Dr Daniel Drage
Dr Daniel Drage is the Birmingham-based post-doctoral research fellow on the SAFER project. Having worked on the FUEL project and ELEVATE projects, he has extensive knowledge of target compound extraction mass-spectrometric analysis techniques for both BFRs and PFASs. Additionally, with his prior work on environmental monitoring of POPs in and around Australian landfills, he provides the team with a historical knowledge of the work a project such as FUEL will entail as well as being qualified to spearhead the compound-analysis in leachate and other landfill-based samples requiring a high degree of processing.
Dr Harald Berresheim
Dr Harald Berresheim from the National University of Ireland Galway is the Principal Investigator of the SAFER project based in Ireland. Previously, he has been the Principal Investigator in numerous research projects related to atmospheric physics and environmental chemistry including those funding by the EPA and the Science Foundation of Ireland. He currently acts as Deputy Director of the Mace Head Atmospheric Monitoring Station and leads the research on Atmospheric Trace Gases within the Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies.Dr Martin Sharkey
Dr Martin Sharkey is the Ireland-based post-doctoral research fellow working on SAFER. Having received his PhD from NUIG’s School of Physics while working on both the FUEL and WAFER projects, he has gained extensive knowledge of Irish waste and recycling systems, sampling protocols, and POPs legislation. Based on his prior experience, he will be coordinating the sampling campaign in Ireland as well as leading the further testing of the X-Ray Fluorescence screening methodology developed as part of the WAFER project.Dr Marie Coggins
Dr Marie Coggins, is a lecturer in Exposure Science at the School of Physics, NUI Galway and a member of the Health from Environment group at the Ryan Institute, NUI Galway. She has worked in industry and academia, managing numerous research projects related to the measurement of human exposure to physical, chemical and biological pollutants in a range of microenvironments. Previous research has involved the measurement of exposures to glyphosate and flame retardants among the Irish population using Human Biomonitoring. She is currently Academic Director of the NUI Galway MSc & HDip Occupational and Environmental Health & Safety programmes in the College of Science.
