RIMS Updates

We are pleased to announce that we will soon be moving to a new Research Information Management System (RIMS), a platform designed to enhance how we manage, share, and promote our research. This system will provide us with an excellent opportunity to showcase the breadth and impact of our research to both internal and external audiences.

You can get an introduction to the new system here and read here about how you can unlock the full potential of your research in the new system.

As we move towards the launch of the new system we will be providing detailed guides, FAQs, and recommendations for standardizing profiles and approaches to ensure consistency across the university.

For now, we recommend that you continue to keep your existing IRIS research profile up to date. This will ensure a smoother transition when we migrate to the new portal, as we will be doing a bulk migration of data currently on IRIS to the new RIMS portal and will be touch with further details about this.

You are one of a kind!  With that in mind, it is so important to keep your profile up-to-date.

Top tips

1. Create/update your IRIS profile

Profiles - a brief introduction

At our University, IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) is the online tool which will allow you to create your own NUI Galway webpage.

Managing your individual profile is something only you can do.  Whether it's having your own  profile page on IRIS or securing your own unique code via Orcid ID - there are steps you can take to make sure your basic information is searchable.

The library has a guide on how to manage your research profile.  Visit Dissemination to find out how to publish and promote your research in your field.  Visit our Communication and Engagement section to learn about other ways to get your profile and research out there into the wider world.

Below are the fundamentals to make sure your peers and the world of research can find you.

Don't forget to also look out for the President's Awards for Research Excellence.

The following list will take you through some of the key things to know.

IRIS and Web Profile Page

IRIS (Institutional Research Information System) is a user-friendly, intuitive, web-based system that enables researchers and academic staff to create, update and maintain their own web profiles/CV’s and showcase their research expertise and achievements to a global audience.

IRIS is seamlessly integrated with the University institutional open access repository. Through IRIS publication full text can be uploaded to ARAN and once your IRIS profile is published it will allow your colleagues and others to more easily cite your publications in referencing.  More information and guides to using IRIS can be found here.

Log in using your standard Campus Account (UDS) username and password. For more information on IRIS or if you have any queries please contact iris@nuigalway.ie

First-time users of IRIS may need their profile activated.  Please contact iris@nuigalway.ie for your profile to be activated.

University Name

The correct institutional name for citation purposes is 'National University of Ireland Galway' and this name must be used, in conjunction with other Institute, Centre or School names, when submitting papers for publications.

Open Access and Aran

NUI Galway has a policy supporting open access to research outputs. Authors of peer-reviewed articles and peer-reviewed conference papers resulting from research carried out at NUI Galway must deposit a copy in the ARAN (Access to Research at NUI Galway) repository.  ARAN enables easy discovery of publications through global search engines such as Google and complements IRIS by linking from author profiles to the full text of University publications.   ARAN collects, preserves and makes freely available scholarly communication, including peer-reviewed articles, working papers and conference papers created by NUI Galway researchers.

Through IRIS publication full text can be uploaded to ARAN and once your IRIS profile is published it will allow your colleagues and others to more easily cite your publications in referencing.  See Help for information on how to submit your publications to ARAN.

ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a non-proprietary alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and other academic authors and contributors.

It provides a unique identifier for individuals to use with their name as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. For example, the late Stephen Hawking's ORCID ID was /0000-0002-9079-593X, so as not to be confused with any other S. Hawking.

This persistent digital identifier distinguishes them from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between them and their professional activities ensuring that their work is fully captured and recognised.  Click here to find out more.

SciVal

SciVal is the research analytics tool for measuring metrics gathered from the Scopus dataset. Both SciVal and Scopus are Elsevier products and both offer quick, easy access to the research performance of over 8,500 research institutions and 220 nations worldwide.   SciVal provides metrics from a country level to an individual researcher level spreading across all subject areas or at a more granular subject area/ to sub-category subject area. Click here for more information.

Scopus

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books, and conference proceedings.  It covers nearly 22,000 titles from over 5,000 publishers. Delivering a comprehensive overview of the world's research output in the fields of Science, Technology, Medicine, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities.  Find out more about Scopus here.

You can see some great tutorials here for Scopus: https://service.elsevier.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14799/supporthub/scopus/

Agresso

Agresso is a web-based application that allows you to view and manage your research project.  Users must have a valid login ID and Password to access Agresso.

Access permissions per account are granted by the Information Solutions & Services Department via a service desk ticket. Written (email) authorisation will be required from the budget holder of the account outlining what permissions are to be granted.  More detail is available via the Research Accounts Office and the address for the login page is: https://agresso.nuigalway.ie
